Chef Bev Lazo has been to hell and back and celebrated her new celebrity status.

Lazo is believed to be the first Filipino chef to compete on the Fox reality cooking competition Hell’s Kitchen hosted by fiery celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsay.

She held a viewing party at her home restaurant Border Grill, owned by a pair of former Top Chef Masters.

“I think it’s cool and it’s a great way to represent our culture. We have a lot of great chefs who are Filipino and I think it’s time for us to shine,” she said.

The series premiered on Fox Thursday night.

The Pangasinan-born chef from Border Grill is among 20 chefs competing in front of Ramsay.

Luxurious prizes including vacations and shopping sprees are given throughout the season. However, humiliating punishment is also given out by Ramsay, who has the final say on who is eliminated each week.

“Working in the restaurant industry I’m used to working in that environment, a little more intense. I’m a big fan of chef Ramsey and it was an honor to be able to work side by side with him and to get yelled at. it’s just for him to push you to work harder and make you a better chef and that’s why he does what he does and I respect that totally,” she added.

The 43-year old mother of 2 first found a passion in cooking at age 9, getting inspiration from her mother Evelyn, a registered nurse.

“Nasa kusina ako palagi nagluluto mga pinakbet, adobo but her specialty is different baka doon nya na kita kasi mahilig ako mag-luto,” said her mother.

In the history of television cooking competitions, only two Filipinos have won–Paul Qui won Top Chef Season 9 while Khristianne Uy won The Taste last year.

Foodies believe Lazo’s appearance on the Hell’s Kitchen will only raise the profile of Filipino cuisine.

“The more that we get our people out there to promote what our cuisine could be so people could ask questions to know what Filipino food is, I think it’s great,” said Coolinary Trends’ Lawrence Fama.

On the season premier, Lazo got Chef Ramsey’s approval with her signature southeast Asian fish taco which she served to her friends families and supporters.
